I’m a slow learner about technical things so I try to improve just one small thing per video. I stayed consistent and posted about one video per week. When you improve your communication, you transform your leadership influence. The most obvious difference was that he kept improving his communication skills. When I came back just one year later, he had already been promoted to the position of team leader of the same group.īy my third trip to see the client, he had an official managerial position and now supervised a few teams. His career was taking off! In my first workshop there, I noticed that one of the new individual contributors was a more effective communicator than the rest. For instance, I recently worked with a corporate client for a few yearly offsites in a row. I've seen this play out in real life many times. Your leadership and communication skills are almost inseparable. Presentations may be a monologue, but Q&A has to be a dialogue. The key to answering questions well is to keep them concise. After looking at both sides, you’d simply say, “On balance, I believe option A is our right choice because it has the best upside and most acceptable downside.” Some people call this a cost/benefit analysis where you’d explain the pros and the cons or you’re asking them to choose either option A or option B. Explain both sides of an issue equally well. That shows your fluency on the subject itself.Ĥ. State your point clearly and then immediately follow up with an example, statistic, story, or other supporting details. Support ideas with evidence and give concrete specifics. Explain yourself clearly and concisely without oversimplifying a subject so much that you neglect its most important features.ģ. Practice explaining complex ideas in plain language. The more potential words you have available in your mental library, the better positioned you are to communicate your ideas precisely in the moment.Ģ. That does not mean using lots of "fancy" words.
